The James Rutley Grand Memorial Fund at the Toronto Community Foundation supports charitable organizations in the City of Toronto that work to improve the lives of people with physical disabilities.
Background
James Rutley Grand was a man of spirit and determination. Afflicted with polio as an adult, Mr. Grand was told he would probably never walk again. His determination following this discouraging prognosis helped him make a full recovery.
Mr. Grand was the grandson of James Grand, who with his brother-in-law Samuel Toy, founded Grand & Toy in 1882. A successful businessman, a keen bridge player, avid traveller and devoted community volunteer, he died just before his 72nd birthday after a full and active life.
