Dishing up a recipe for community vitality
Alexandra Park residents publish A Pinch of This, a collection of recipes as part of Recipe for Community.

Updated December 4, 2009

A Pinch of This: Recipes from Alexandra Park is hot off the press and into the kitchen. This brand new book features recipes collected from Alexandra Park to showcase the rich diversity of its residents, their stories, and favourite dishes that contribute to this neighbourhood's vitality. More than a book of recipes, it's a testament to the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and the strong community values of its residents.

The book is part of Recipe for Community, a collaborative project with Alexandra Park residents working alongside the Toronto Community Foundation, the City's Toronto Office of Partnerships, and Toronto Community Housing. Recipe for Community brings together the four key "ingredients" of food, convening, youth engagement, and neighbourhood beautification, including planting a community garden, installing flower boxes, and creating public artwork.

Food Sleuth, writer, broadcaster, and cook Marion Kane worked with the residents to collect and test the recipes, which include one of Mayor David Miller's favourites. Money raised from sales of the book will go to Alexandra Park's Green Space Collective to fund a community cooking program and gardens. The Green Space Collective is a group of residents from Alexandra Park who bring people together to beautify the neighbourhood through various greening initiatives.

A Pinch of This A Pinch of This: Recipes from Alexandra Park
Alexandra Park is a vibrant downtown Toronto neighbourhood. And in true Toronto fashion, it is home to thousands of people representing over a dozen different cultural backgrounds from around the world. Together, they have assembled a handful of recipes, and a story or two, reflecting the incredible diversity of our city. Authentic Pastelles from Trinidad, a hearty Jamaican Rundown stew, a savoury Kabuli Lamb dish from Afghanistan, and a delectable Chicken Adobo from the Philippines are just some of the easily-made recipes in A Pinch of This. These outstanding dishes bring the tastes of Alexandra Park - and the world - to you.
