September 9, 2009

The Toronto Community Foundation's Legacy Society is a community of devoted Torontonians who selected the Community Foundation as their permanent means of giving back to the city they love and the causes they care about. Today, we remember two remarkable Torontonians - James Vandewater and Sheila Kirpalani.

Vandewater Charitable Foundation

We are saddened to announce the passing of a long-time friend of Toronto Community Foundation, James Vandewater.

Mr. Vandewater passed away suddenly on July 12th in Creemore at the age of 76. He will be deeply missed by his family and the many community organizations he has supported over the years.

Mr. Vandewater was born in Toronto in 1932 and was always active in the community. He was an avid bridge player and Go Home Lake cottager, known for his ability to seek out a good time in any situation. Above all, he was a devoted and loving husband and father and great friend to so very many.

Sheila Kirpalani Foundation
Toronto Community Foundation would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of Sheila Kirpalani.

Sheila was a member of the Legacy Society at Toronto Community Foundation and we are pleased to have her son Anish Kirpalani joining our Fundholder family.

Given the passion with which Sheila lived her life, we are excited to see the great work that will happen in her memory through the Sheila Kirpalani Foundation.

"Our foundation will make charitable donations on an annual
basis in areas of interest of my mother. The three main pillars of these charitable donations will be health promotion, education and music," said Mr. Kirpalani in his mother's eulogy.
